Psyttalia Wastewater Treatment Plant

Project Infrastructure Projects
Type Waste Water Treatment - Solid Waste
Location Athens, Greece

The wastewater treatment plant of Psyttalia, is the final recipient of domestic sewage and pre-treated industrial wastewater of the greater Athens area, with  an hydraulic capacity of 27 m3/s and treatment capacity of 5,600,000 Equivalent Population. The plant is located at the area of Akrokeramos and on the island of Psyttalia, 2km west of Piraeus Harbor. The preliminary treatment facilities (coarse and fine screening, grit removal) of the incoming sewage are located in an area of 70,000 m2 at Akrokeramos, while the primary treatment (primary sedimentation), the biological wastewater treatment including nitrogen removal, disinfection, sludge treatment facilities (thickening, anaerobic digestion, dewatering and drying) and the co-generation plants are located on the island of Psyttalia, on a surface of 560.000 m2. The treated effluent is discharged via two submersible pipelines in the Saronic Gulf at a depth of 63m.
Aktor is also providing Operation and Maintenance Services for the specific Wastewater Treatment Plant. The operation and maintenance contract includes works for the improvement of energy management and exploitation.
The final effluent specifications SS<35mg/l, COD<125mg/l, BOD5<25mg/l are met, while the treatment efficiency in terms of nitrogen is greater than 80%.
